Let's start out with the elephant in the room -- this is expensive and high quality.
So, why would you get this? Can you rationalize a part like this to your wife? I can't answer that for you, but I can tell you my story. :)
I had been looking for years for the GD Subaru S12 WRC wings. I had rallyX'd many Legacies, Impreza 25RSes (EJ25D and EJ251), WRX EJ20s, WRX EJ25s but never an EJ25STi. I finally got a 05 STI and I was lucky enough to do a lot of Subaru Challenges in 04-06... it was an amazing time in my life I will always remember. I helped with Sandblast and got to meet a lot of really great Subaru employees and people who enjoyed Subaru. I got to even see some of my BMX friends make the jump over to racing! Finally, my wife and I started a family, and at the time, selling the STi and walking away from Racing was the right call.
Trying to find another, good condition GD STi for the next 10 years was an... interesting task. I kept the Hotbits / AGX suspension in the garage with the Scoobysport exhaust and SPT parts waiting until I would pick up that perfect BD STi.
That day never came.
Luckily, in 2018, I was forunate enough that life allowed me to pick up an STi again, but this time a VA1. Soon after, Subaru announced the end of the EJ-series "Imprezas" and the end of an era. As a result, I wanted to give my yet-to-be-rallyX'd STi a proper wing (the VA STi wing just never made sense to me without a lower element on the duck lid). My history with the brand, racing and being a positive part in the community... I felt like I had earned it. So, I ordered this wing from VSC. VSC was VERY communicative on the ordering and shipping. Working with them felt great! One word of warning - if you don't have a house or a garage, please consider that as the box is HUGE!
So, to this day, my MY16 STi with a VSC wing goes out with me on MTB rides, picking up the girls from school (with boyfriends) and yes, to Starbucks. It turned my 30mpg 37.5 mpg commutes to work into 19.1 mpg commutes! It is a nice way to capstone my time with the EJ STis and something I will treasure, as long as I can. Maybe one day that will also include putting some 4pots on the STi with ... some form of VA rallyXable suspension... and getting out there on 15x7s and ripping up the dirt, if I am fortunate. Until then, I am happy with the year I have had this wing!
Thanks for the opportunity at something like this, VSC. I really appreciate it and all you have done for Subaru Motorsports in NA and for the extreme athletes you have always supported.
